12月2日，尼日利亚食品和药品监管部门称，截至当天，该国生产的一种掺入有毒化学品的婴儿配方奶粉已经造成34名婴儿死亡。此前，官方公布的死亡婴儿数是25人。
增稠剂疑遭污染
据报道，一种名为“我的皮金宝贝”的婴儿奶粉在生产过程中被添加了有毒增稠剂，导致该国34名婴儿因食用该品牌奶粉中毒身亡。
“我的皮金宝贝”婴儿奶粉由尼日利亚第一大城市拉各斯的一家奶粉企业生产。该厂目前正处于警方的调查之中。
尼日利亚食品和药品监管部门的调查人员发现，这家奶粉企业从一家没有营业执照和卫生许可的化学试剂经销商处获得了增稠剂。据悉，该化学试剂经销商的地址位于拉各斯郊外最大垃圾场附近的贫民窟中。警方怀疑增稠剂的原料和成品都不可避免地受到了污染。
此外，这批大约40升的增稠剂用一个没有密封、也没有贴注标签的塑料容器盛放，被运到了奶粉企业，因此调查人员怀疑增稠剂在运输过程中又被污染。
目前，生产增稠剂的巴莱瓦的化学制剂生产商的高管已经被警方带走调查，一些提供了增稠剂原料的嫌疑人也被拘捕。
有毒奶粉紧急下架
尼日利亚食品和药品管理局的官员2日对外介绍称，11月19日该部门接到了第一例婴儿食用奶粉而患病的报告，该名婴儿是在尼日利亚北部地区被发现的。之后几天，管理局接连接到了数起类似报告。调查人员发现，所有的患儿都食用了同一品牌的奶粉。
于是，管理局要求“我的皮金宝贝”婴儿奶粉在全国范围内紧急下架，并对该奶粉进行化验调查。截至2日，管理局共查获了2000桶该品牌婴儿配方奶粉，发现其中255桶已经被污染。但是管理局没有对外介绍，如今还有多少毒奶粉在市面上流通。
二甘醇是杀人元凶
管理局还表示，调查发现，有毒的增稠剂里面含有的具有助溶和吸湿功能的二甘醇是毒奶粉事件的元凶。食用这种奶粉之后，缺少抵抗力的婴儿会产生发烧、惊厥、腹泻、呕吐等症状，更容易患上严重的肾结石，以致不能排泄甚至可以致死。尼日利亚政府已经从英国伦敦购置了相当数量的药品，尽全力治疗遭到毒奶粉侵害的婴儿。
二甘醇污染事件在尼日利亚并不是孤例，此前在南美国家巴拿马也曾发生过类似的事件。至少有数百人因此中毒，其中116人死亡。
